Practicum:

General Information
A practicum provides a first field experience in a student’s chosen career field, whether off or on campus. A practicum is available for one to three credit hours. In all situations, the student must work under the supervision of a full-time faculty member, who will coordinate the experience. To be eligible for a practicum, students must complete an agreement form with the Unit’s field experience director and the site supervisor for the practicum. This agreement form outlines specific activities for the practicum. Practicum opportunities may be provided for the student by the Unit’s field experience director or may be solicited by the student independently of the department. In either case, they must be approved by the Unit’s field experience director prior to registration.

Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to maintain professional conduct and to conform to appropriate dress and ethical and performance standards for the practicum site. They are expected to follow the practicum site supervisor’s instructions and abide by the hours agreed upon.

Practicum students will provide their site supervisors with midterm and final evaluation forms and other required materials. Students are also responsible for ensuring the forms are returned to the Unit’s field experience director at midterm and before the end of the semester. The Unit’s field experience director assumes total responsibility for assigning the midterm and final grades.

Site Supervisor Responsibilities
Practicum site supervisors are encouraged to assign work that challenges the students and prepares them for a career. The supervisor must invest training and personal time in the practicum program. Students must be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses related to the practicum. The practicum supervisor should confer with the Unit’s field experience director at the end of the experience. These forms will be returned to the Unit’s field experience director at the end of the semester.
