KNWD 91.7 FM is a noncommercial radio station licensed to the Board of Trustees of Northwestern State University and operates out of the Department of Journalism facilities at 109 Kyser Hall. KNWD transmits a digital stereo FM signal 24 hours a day to the University community and the city of Natchitoches and surrounding areas. It is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the University at large.

Only students are allowed to work for KNWD, which provides opportunities to acquire radio management skills and become disc jockeys. In addition to music, KNWD presents a weekly news magazine, Demon Flashback, which provides in-depth coverage of on campus events and activities. The station has plans to stream programs online.

Scholarships are available for some positions and one scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming freshman. Any student may apply to work without pay in the station.
