Mrs. Mary Brocato

Brocato

Mary Brocato, associate professor and coordinator of broadcast journalism courses, joined the journalism department in 1999. She also serves as the student media coordinator and advises Potpourri, the NSU yearbook.

Mrs. Brocato obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Louisiana State University and a master’s degree in mass communications from LSU also.

She has more than 20 years of teaching experience at the high school and university level. She also brings many years of professional experience in journalism to the department in the areas of broadcast news, print and public relations.

Prior to her teaching career, she worked for 15 years as a television news reporter, public relations professional, and newspaper editor and publisher. She has worked as press secretary to a Louisiana governor, an editor of an agricultural magazine for the Farm Credit Banks, assistant director and unit manager for several documentary films produced by World Health Organization, and edited and published a small town weekly newspaper.

Her professional and teaching experiences are diverse, and she strongly believes that a degree in journalism provides many opportunities for interesting, challenging and exciting work.

Mrs. Brocato considers strong reporting and writing skills to be the cornerstones of a career in journalism. She believes that the ways of delivering the story may differ and evolve, but the journalism fundamentals of accurate, unfair, unbiased reporting and good writing should always remain the same.

Brocato believes she has the best of both worlds because she has been able to combine her love of journalism with her love of teaching young people and helping them prepare for journalism careers.
