J-Day 2009 Schedule of Events

 

 The Department of Journalism at Northwestern State University provides a program of study that prepares students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds for varied careers in journalism and mass communications or for advanced studies. Built on a broad liberal arts tradition, the program incorporates the values, ethics and attitudes associated with professional standards of mass media.

New as of fall 2009 are concentrations in media studies entertainment technology and an online degree in journalism. Please, contact the department for more information on courses and curriculum requirements.

  • Media studies will prepare students for today's converged media in which reporters and content creators tell stories via multiple platforms. Students will learn traditional news values and journalistic skills along with current technologies. Elective courses allow students to tailor studies to fit their career interests. This new concentration builds on the department's previous concentrations in broadcast, news editorial and public relations.
  • Entertainment technology will prepare students for the many associated careers to include radio, television, Internet, specialized media productions, and film and documentary making. The curriculum includes courses in journalism, English, film studies, theater, communication, and new media. 
  • The online degree program is especially suited for adult learners and those who cannot attend classes at the Natchitoches campus.

Students at NSU have access to modern production equipment and fully equipped computer labs.

All faculty members have advanced degrees and are experienced professionals, providing insight beyond textbooks.
